Using tools

Using tools lets you gather materials and work the ground. You equip one item at a time, or choose bare hands.

The kit

• The Scanner records species in the journal index. You carry it from the start.
• The Axe fells wild trees for logs. Wild fruit trees also drop their remaining ripe fruit.
• The Pickaxe breaks rocks and ore veins.
• The Shovel removes stumps and digs holes. It also digs Sand on beaches.
• The Hoe tills open ground into soil.
• The Water Bucket waters beds.
• The Landscape Tool marks ground for the Excavator to dig, fill or add water. You receive it when her hut is finished. Digging produces dirt, and filling uses it.

Fishing tools

• The Fishing Rod casts for fish.
• The Ice Drill drills holes in pond ice.

Carrying and choosing

The toolkit crate by the rocket holds five field tools: axe, pickaxe, shovel, hoe and water bucket. Select a seed packet or sapling to plant it. When you use the wrong tool on a tree, rock or stump, its card names the required tool. See Scanning, Gathering and mining and Farming.
